The
Kenya Space Agency (KSA) continues to strengthen its role in leveraging
advanced space technologies for national development through strategic
collaborations. In a recent engagement, Microsoft AI for Good Labs Officers,
Dr. Caleb Robinson and Dr. Girm Girmaw Abebe Tadesse, paid a courtesy visit to
the acting KSA Director General, Brig. Hillary Kipkosgey, to discuss the
progress of their joint AI-driven agricultural initiative.

KSA
and Microsoft AI for Good are working together to develop artificial
intelligence models that harness Earth observation data to support informed
decision-making in agriculture. Their flagship project, the Agriculture
Information System, is currently being piloted in Murang’a County, focusing on Land Use Land Cover
(LULC) mapping.
This initiative is bringing together key stakeholders, including the Murang’a County
Government, the Ministry of Agriculture, universities, and agricultural sector
partners, to
optimize resource allocation and enhance food security.

The
meeting provided an opportunity for Microsoft’s AI for Good team to update
KSA’s leadership on the model’s implementation progress and discuss strategies
for expanding it nationwide. Additionally, both parties explored avenues for
building capacity in AI model generation, aiming to empower experts with the
skills needed to develop and deploy AI-driven solutions for Kenya’s
agricultural sector.
