Safaricom
Telecommunications Ethiopia PLC has stepped up to provide essential assistance
to internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the Gebi Resu Zone, Dulesa, and Awash
Fentale woredas of the Afar region. The company’s support, valued at one
million birr, includes 25 quintals of macaroni, 25 quintals of rice, clothing,
and sanitary materials collected from its staff.
The donation is
expected to directly benefit over 200 households, offering much-needed relief
to those who have lost their homes and livelihoods due to the disaster. Local
and regional officials have praised Safaricom Ethiopia for its timely and
impactful contribution, highlighting the company’s role as a responsible
corporate citizen.
The earthquake
has left many families in the Afar region displaced and in urgent need of food,
clothing, and other essentials. Safaricom Ethiopia’s donation of macaroni,
rice, and sanitary materials addresses these immediate needs, providing a
lifeline to affected communities. The company’s staff also contributed
clothing, demonstrating their collective commitment to supporting those in
distress.
Ali Ismail,
Head of Disaster Prevention and IDP Coordination for the Afar region, commended
Safaricom Ethiopia for its swift response. “Beyond its timely support for
IDPs, Safaricom Ethiopia’s contribution sets an example for others to follow,”
he said. “This kind of solidarity is crucial in helping communities recover
from such disasters.”
The Head of the
Agriculture and Natural Resources Office for Dulesa Woreda, Muhammad Ascare
also expressed deep appreciation for Safaricom Ethiopia’s efforts. “Safaricom
Ethiopia is among the few companies that have recognized the urgency of this
crisis and responded accordingly,” he said. “We deeply appreciate this
support on behalf of the IDPs and our Woreda.”
The company’s
initiative reflects its broader commitment to corporate social responsibility
and its dedication to making a positive impact in the communities it serves.
