The Director of FinTech and Innovation at the Bank of Ghana, Kwame Oppong has been appointed to the World Economic Forum’s prestigious Global Leaders Council on Decentralized Finance (DeFi).

The appointment, announced by Oppong himself via social media, positions one of Africa’s foremost financial technology experts at the heart of global conversations shaping the future of decentralized financial systems.

As a passionate advocate for financial inclusion, Mr. Oppong brings to the council a vital perspective on how blockchain-based financial solutions could transform economic participation across Africa.

“DeFi holds transformative potential—especially for Africa,” Oppong stated. “It can bridge access gaps, empower underserved communities, and drive sustainable economic growth across the continent.”

In his new role, Oppong emphasized his commitment to developing frameworks that harmonize financial innovation with consumer protection – a challenge many African regulators face as digital currencies and decentralized platforms gain popularity.

“We must shape responsible, innovative approaches to decentralized finance—balancing progress with stability, protection, and equity,” he noted.

Kwame Oppong’s appointment marks an important milestone for African representation in global fintech governance, ensuring the continent’s unique needs inform DeFi development:

True to his reputation as a bridge-builder, he extended an invitation to fellow innovators: “If you’re equally passionate about the future of finance and Africa’s role in it, let’s connect and collaborate!”
