The African
Telecommunications Union (ATU) has hosted high-level discussions with global
technology leader Qualcomm to advance digital transformation across the
continent. ATU Secretary General John Omo welcomed Qualcomm's Senior Director
of Government Affairs for Africa, Ms. Elizabeth Migwalla, at the Union's
Nairobi headquarters, marking another step in strengthening public-private
partnerships for Africa's ICT development.
The meeting
focused on several strategic initiatives, including preparations for the
upcoming Regional Development Forum and Regional Preparatory Meetings scheduled
to take place in Nairobi under the auspices of the Communications Authority of
Kenya. These important gatherings will bring together policymakers, regulators,
and industry leaders to shape Africa's telecommunications agenda.
Technical
discussions covered critical areas of radiocommunication and standardization,
reflecting the shared commitment to developing harmonized frameworks that will
support next-generation connectivity across African nations. Particular
attention was given to the forthcoming finals of the ATU Africa Innovation
Challenge, a flagship initiative developed in partnership with Huawei and the
International Telecommunication Union (ITU) that will showcase Africa's
brightest tech talents in just two weeks.
Secretary
General Omo emphasized the importance of such collaborations in accelerating
digital inclusion, stating that "partnerships with industry leaders
like Qualcomm are essential to realizing Africa's digital potential."
Ms. Migwalla reaffirmed Qualcomm's dedication to supporting Africa's
technological growth through innovation and knowledge sharing.
The discussions
built upon existing cooperation between ATU and Qualcomm in areas ranging from
spectrum policy to digital skills development. Both parties agreed to maintain
close coordination as Africa prepares for major digital milestones, including
the rollout of 5G networks and expansion of broadband infrastructure.
