The global
mobile industry has elevated African technology leadership with the election of
MTN Group President and CEO Ralph Mupita as Deputy Chair of the GSMA Board of
Directors. The appointment, effective immediately through 2026, positions one
of Africa's most influential telecom executives at the helm of critical
decisions shaping the future of mobile connectivity worldwide.
Mr. Mupita's
selection comes during a pivotal period for digital inclusion, with mobile
networks increasingly recognized as essential infrastructure for socioeconomic
development across emerging markets. "This role presents an opportunity
to ensure Africa and the Global South fully participate in the digital
revolution," stated Mupita, emphasizing mobile technology's
transformative potential in addressing pressing development challenges.
GSMA Director
General Vivek Badrinath welcomed the appointment, noting Mupita's proven track
record in steering MTN Group through complex market transformations across 19
African markets. The MTN leader brings to the role extensive experience from
his prior positions as Group CFO and CEO of Old Mutual Emerging Markets,
combined with technical credentials including engineering and business degrees
from the University of Cape Town and executive education from Harvard.
During his MTN
tenure since 2017, Mupita has overseen strategic milestones including the
successful listings of multiple African subsidiaries and the group's transition
into a leading digital platform provider. His GSMA leadership will focus on
bridging the digital divide through innovative connectivity solutions and
advocating for policies that accelerate inclusive digital transformation.
The appointment
reinforces Africa's growing influence in global technology governance, ensuring
emerging market perspectives inform critical decisions on spectrum allocation,
mobile financial services, and next-generation network deployments. Industry analysts
anticipate Mupita will prioritize sustainable connectivity models tailored for
low-income populations during his term.
