The Deputy
Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa has officially launched the
Uganda Parliamentary Internet Governance Forum (UP-IGF) at Méstil Hotel &
Residences in Nsambya. The event, organized by the Internet Society Uganda
Chapter in collaboration with the Uganda Internet Governance Forum, marks a
pivotal step in addressing critical digital challenges and opportunities in the
country.

Hon. Dr. Chris
Baryomunsi, Minister of ICT and National Guidance, hailed the initiative as
timely, noting its alignment with the government’s ongoing efforts to expand
the national fibre optic backbone infrastructure. “The UP-IGF will play a
crucial role in shaping policies that protect Ugandans online while fostering
an inclusive and innovative digital ecosystem,” he stated during the
launch.
The forum will
focus on three key priorities: safeguarding Ugandan internet users from scams
and cyber harassment, advancing digital rights such as inclusion and freedom of
expression, and supporting the development of robust policy frameworks to drive
Uganda’s digital transformation.
Rt. Hon.
Tayebwa underscored the importance of multi-stakeholder collaboration in
achieving these goals, urging lawmakers, civil society, and the private sector
to work together to harness the internet’s potential for national development.

The UP-IGF
launch reflects Uganda’s commitment to creating a secure, inclusive, and
rights-respecting digital environment, ensuring that the benefits of the
internet reach all citizens while mitigating its risks. The forum is expected
to serve as a platform for dialogue and action, positioning Uganda as a leader
in internet governance within the region.
