The United Nations Office
for Digital and Emerging Technologies has taken part in high-level discussions
at the India AI Impact Summit 2026, contributing to ongoing efforts to shape
the next phase of international cooperation on artificial intelligence governance.
At the summit,
representatives from the Global South, alongside stakeholders from industry,
the technical community, civil society, and academia, engaged with the
Co-Chairs of the Global Dialogue on AI Governance, Ambassador Egriselda López
of El Salvador and Ambassador Rein Tammsaar of Estonia. The consultations
focused on defining priorities and expectations for the emerging UN-backed
global process on AI governance.
Participants underscored the
importance of ensuring that governance frameworks reflect the perspectives of
those developing, deploying, regulating, and impacted by AI technologies.
Discussions emphasized the need for implementation-oriented approaches, expanded
capacity-building initiatives, and safeguards aligned with international human
rights principles.
The United Nations Office
for Digital and Emerging Technologies indicated that it will continue
collaborating with partners across the UN system and broader global ecosystem
in preparation for the upcoming Global Dialogue scheduled to take place in
Geneva in July. The dialogue is expected to serve as a platform for advancing
inclusive, practical mechanisms for international cooperation on AI governance.
The engagement comes amid
increasing global attention on the regulatory, ethical, and socio-economic
implications of AI, as policymakers and institutions seek to balance innovation
with accountability, security, and equitable access.
