The Director of AfriDSAI and ABSA Chair of Data Science at the University of Pretoria, Professor Vukosi Marivate has been announced as a member of the newly established United Nations Independent Scientific Panel on Artificial Intelligence.

The appointment follows recommendations from a preceding High-Level Advisory body that advocated for the creation of the panel to guide global AI policy and research.

Marivate, also co-founder of Lelapa AI, Deep Learning Indaba, and the Masakhane Research Foundation, highlighted the significance of the role during the India AI Impact Summit, where he met with UN Secretary-General António Guterres.

He emphasized the opportunity to continue advancing Africa’s contributions to global AI discussions while supporting evidence-based governance and responsible AI deployment worldwide.
