The
Director of AfriDSAI and ABSA Chair of Data Science at the University of
Pretoria, Professor Vukosi Marivate has been announced as a member of the newly
established United Nations Independent Scientific Panel on Artificial
Intelligence.
The
appointment follows recommendations from a preceding High-Level Advisory body
that advocated for the creation of the panel to guide global AI policy and
research.
Marivate,
also co-founder of Lelapa AI, Deep Learning Indaba, and the Masakhane Research
Foundation, highlighted the significance of the role during the India AI Impact
Summit, where he met with UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
He
emphasized the opportunity to continue advancing Africa’s contributions to
global AI discussions while supporting evidence-based governance and
responsible AI deployment worldwide.
