A
high-level delegation from the Southern African Science Service Centre for
Climate Change and Adaptive Land Management (SASSCAL) is in Accra this week to
deepen cooperation with its sister institution, the West African Science
Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use (WASCAL).
The
visit, held from March 2 to 4 at WASCAL’s headquarters, marks a step toward
enhanced collaboration between the two regional climate research organisations.
The SASSCAL delegation is led by Governing Board Chair Prof. Gabriel Miguel and
Interim Vice-Chairperson Ms. Alexandria Angala. They are joined by Executive
Director Prof. Nelago Indongo and other senior officials.

The
WASCAL delegation is hosted by 2nd Vice Chair Prof. Agyenim Boateng and
Executive Director Prof. Immanuel Ramde.
Both
institutions share a mandate to strengthen climate change research, promote
sustainable land management and build scientific capacity to support
evidence-based decision-making across Southern and West Africa. They work
closely with governments, universities and international partners to address
climate change and environmental sustainability challenges.
A
key outcome of the visit was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding
formalising cooperation between the two organisations. Under the agreement,
SASSCAL and WASCAL will collaborate on joint research initiatives, fundraising
and grant proposal development, capacity-building programmes, webinars and
alumni activities, panel discussions and high-level strategic engagements.

Officials
said the partnership aims to foster stronger scientific exchange and
coordinated action to enhance climate resilience across the African continent.
The collaboration is supported by international partners, including Germany’s
Federal Ministry of Education, Research, Technology and Space.
