The
Chief Executive Officer of the National
Commission on Research, Science and Technology, Anicia Peters, has been elected as the next
President of the Sub-Saharan Africa Science
Granting Councils Initiative (SGCI).
Peters is expected to assume the presidency of the
SGCI Alliance in September 2026, marking a leadership milestone for Namibia within the continental research funding
initiative.

As part of the transition, the National Commission on
Research, Science and Technology will host the SGCI All Partners Meeting for
the first time. The event is scheduled to take place during the week of 28
September 2026 in Windhoek.
The SGCI initiative brings together
several international and regional funders that are jointly providing research
co-funding to 20 African science granting councils. Under the current SGCI-3
phase, funding amounting to $42 million has been confirmed to support research
and innovation activities across the participating countries through 2030.

With
Peters’ appointment, Namibia joins the SGCI leadership council alongside South Africa, Kenya,
Tanzania and Ghana, which currently holds the presidency.
