The
Ministry of Communication, Technology and Innovation has announced the
selection of 30 participants for the residential workshop of the West Africa
School on Internet Governance (WASIG) 2026, following a competitive regional
selection process.
According
to the Ministry, 150 finalists from across West Africa successfully completed
the online phase of the programme before the final cohort was selected for the
in-person residential workshop scheduled to take place in Freetown, Sierra
Leone, as part of the West Africa Internet Governance Forum (WAIGF) 2026. The
hybrid event will be held on 11 May at the Miatta Conference Centre.
WASIG
is a capacity-building initiative designed to equip emerging digital leaders
with the knowledge and skills required to participate effectively in internet
governance and broader digital policy processes across the region.
During
the online training phase, participants were exposed to key thematic areas
including digital sovereignty, artificial intelligence governance, platform
regulation, cybersecurity, policy literacy, and regional cooperation.
The
residential workshop is expected to deepen practical engagement on these
issues, strengthen peer learning among participants, and enhance West Africa’s
capacity to contribute to global and regional digital governance discussions.
The
Ministry noted that the programme continues to play a critical role in
developing a new generation of digital policy professionals capable of shaping
inclusive and forward-looking internet governance frameworks across the
sub-region.
