United
Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has underscored the need for
inclusive and accountable global governance of artificial intelligence, warning
against concentrated control of the technology by a limited number of actors.
Guterres
made the remarks following a meeting with Yoshua Bengio, a member of the UN
Scientific Advisory Board, where discussions focused on the accelerating pace
of AI development and the importance of aligning it with global public
interest.

He
emphasized that as artificial intelligence continues to advance rapidly, the
role of expert advisory bodies remains critical in shaping frameworks that
ensure the technology delivers broad-based benefits while operating within
clear guardrails and accountability mechanisms.
The
UN chief cautioned that decisions about the future of AI should not be
dominated by a small group of countries or private interests, stressing the
importance of shared global standards and multilateral cooperation.
Guterres
reiterated that AI must be developed and governed in a way that reflects
collective global priorities, ensuring that its benefits are accessible to all
and that risks are managed through coordinated international efforts.
