Senegal
has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing inclusive and sustainable digital
transformation during the 2026 session of the International Telecommunication
Union (ITU) Council held in Geneva from April 27 to May 8, where member states
gathered to shape the future of the global digital agenda.
During
the high-level deliberations, Senegal advocated for expanded connectivity in
rural and underserved communities, increased investment in digital skills
development, and greater consideration of the unique challenges facing
developing countries within international digital governance frameworks.
The
discussions at the ITU Council covered a wide range of critical issues,
including universal connectivity, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity,
infrastructure resilience and digital inclusion, as governments and
stakeholders worked to define priorities for a rapidly evolving digital
landscape.
Senegal
used the platform to underscore the importance of ensuring that digital
transformation efforts remain inclusive and equitable, particularly for
countries seeking to bridge infrastructure and capacity gaps while building
resilient digital economies.
On
the sidelines of the council, Senegal also engaged in a series of bilateral
meetings aimed at strengthening international cooperation in emerging
technologies, satellite infrastructure development and broader digital
transition initiatives.
The
engagements opened new opportunities for partnerships that could support the
country’s ambitions to accelerate digital development and expand access to
innovative technologies.
Senegal
also reaffirmed its candidacy for a renewed seat on the ITU Council, signaling
its intention to continue playing an active and constructive role in global
digital policymaking.
The
country said its participation reflects its broader commitment to contributing
to a more inclusive, equitable and impact-driven digital future, while
advocating for policies that better reflect the development realities and
priorities of emerging economies.
