The
Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisation convened the Commonwealth ITU
Group (CIG) during the 2026 ITU Council meeting to discuss regional development
priorities and the future of digital transformation across Commonwealth member
states ahead of the upcoming ITU Plenipotentiary Conference scheduled for
November.

The
meeting featured a keynote address by the Federal Minister of Communications and
Digital Economy of Nigeria, Bosun Tijani, who is serving as Chair of Council
2026. Discussions also included contributions from Ghana’s Minister for
Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, Cosmas
Zavazava, Director of the ITU Telecommunication Development Bureau and Secretary General of CTO, Bernadette Lewis.
Delegates
participating in the session exchanged views on key digital development
priorities across the Commonwealth, including connectivity expansion, digital
transformation, innovation, and inclusive technology development.

The
gathering also included an interactive workshop where member states shared
national experiences and explored opportunities for collaboration on common
digital development challenges and policy priorities.
The
discussions form part of broader preparations for the forthcoming ITU
Plenipotentiary Conference 2026, where member states are expected to shape the
future strategic direction of the International Telecommunication Union and
global digital cooperation.
