The
third edition of UN Virtual Worlds Day 2026 and the second Citiverse Assembly
opened in Geneva, bringing together international stakeholders to examine the
role of artificial intelligence, spatial intelligence, and immersive
technologies in shaping future cities and public services.
The
event, supported by StandICT.eu, is being held under the theme “AI, Spatial
Intelligence, and the Citiverse: Shaping Trusted Digital Futures.”
Discussions
are centred on how AI-enabled virtual environments, digital twins, and spatial
modelling technologies can support urban governance, improve public service
delivery, and promote more inclusive and citizen-focused development outcomes.

Participants
highlighted the growing need for trusted governance frameworks,
interoperability standards, and international cooperation to ensure that
emerging citiverse technologies are deployed in ways that serve the public
interest across borders.
The
event also underscored concerns that the absence of shared standards and
coordinated global frameworks could lead to fragmented and incompatible digital
systems among cities and institutions.
StandICT.eu
fellows Christoph Runde, Torbjörn Lahrin, and Pilar Orero are participating in
the discussions, contributing expertise on interoperability, governance,
standards, and emerging digital environments.
The
gathering has been organised by the International Telecommunication Union
alongside several United Nations agencies and international partners, including
the World Bank Group and the Global Cities Hub.
