The Minister of Information
and Communication Technology, Emma Theofelus has stated that Namibia cannot
afford to delay embracing technology while waiting for ideal conditions,
stressing the importance of accelerating the country’s digital economy agenda.
Speaking during the Huawei
ICT Congress Gala Dinner and the launch of the Women in Tech and 2026 National
Talent Cultivation Project in Windhoek, the Minister said government remains
focused on creating an enabling environment for innovation, digital inclusion
and ICT skills development.

According to Theofelus,
resistance to technology adoption still exists within some communities,
particularly regarding digital infrastructure and online services. However, she
noted that Namibia must continue advancing its digital transformation efforts as
communities gradually adapt to technological changes.
The Minister further
emphasized the need for stronger collaboration between government and the
private sector to drive digital transformation and expand opportunities for
young people, especially women, in the ICT sector.
During the event, Theofelus
also presented awards under the Huawei programme in recognition of
contributions to digital innovation and ICT development.

The event attracted
participation from Sam Nujoma, representatives from Huawei Sub-Saharan Africa,
officials from the Chinese Embassy in Namibia and other industry stakeholders.
The launch of the Women in
Tech and National Talent Cultivation Project forms part of ongoing efforts
aimed at strengthening Namibia’s digital workforce and promoting broader
participation in the country’s growing technology ecosystem.
