The Minister for
Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has
urged MTN Ghana to align its market leadership with improved service quality,
fair pricing, and expanded network coverage as the company marked its 30th
anniversary in Accra.
Speaking at the press launch
held on May 14, 2026, at MTN House, the Minister congratulated the company on
reaching the milestone, describing it as a major achievement in Ghana’s
telecommunications development over the past three decades.

He noted that the sector has
evolved from limited fixed-line services in the 1990s into a modern digital
ecosystem with more than 40 million mobile subscriptions, with MTN playing a
central role in that transformation through the introduction of GSM technology,
mobile money services, and continued investment in network infrastructure.
The Minister also referenced
MTN’s US$1 billion network investment programme and its position as one of the
country’s largest corporate taxpayers.
However, he stressed that
MTN’s classification as a Significant Market Power operator carries increased
responsibility, particularly in relation to pricing, service quality, network
reliability, and transparency.
He highlighted ongoing
consumer concerns, including high data costs, inconsistent rural coverage,
dropped calls, and delays in customer service response, urging the company to
ensure that investments translate into improved user experience.

Samuel Nartey George further
called for stronger collaboration between government, regulators, and industry
stakeholders to address issues such as infrastructure protection,
cybersecurity, digital inclusion, and the national digital skills gap.
He noted that the Ministry
is reviewing key policy frameworks, including spectrum management and data
protection regulations, to support the next phase of sector growth.
Looking ahead, the Minister
emphasized opportunities in emerging technologies such as 5G, artificial
intelligence, cloud computing, and the Internet of Things, encouraging
operators to invest in both commercially viable markets and underserved
communities.
Chief Executive Officer of
MTN Ghana, Stephen Blewett, described the anniversary as a reflection of a
journey marked by connectivity, progress, and national impact.
