Ghana’s
Minister of Communications and Digitalization, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful has revealed
that the government of Ghana through her ministry has expanded the Girls-in-ICT
day to a 3-week program that trains 100 teachers as trainers and 1000 girls
as trainees.
Speaking
as part of a panel discussion at the Network of Women in ICT in Victoria Falls,
Zimbabwe, Minister Owusu-Ekuful said the initiative is being celebrated to
impact more lives and to bridge the gender digital gap.
According
to her, a competition is organized at the end of the training to select the best
hundred girls for the award of laptops and computer labs for the best 10 schools.
She informed the forum that due to the conscious
efforts the government is making to invest in young girls in ICT, she was
hopeful that in 25 years, the narrative of fewer women in leadership and decision-making positions will be a thing of the past.
In another
development, Ghana’s Selasi Domi-Kuwornu has emerged winner of the 10 Miss Geek
finalists at the Transform Africa Summit 2023. She won the competition with her
project Kasakashi, a voice recognition application that enables mobile money
transactions in any language input by the user.
