The Department of Science,
Technology and Innovation has announced the official launch of the expanded
Biovac vaccine manufacturing facility in Cape Town, marking a significant
milestone in the country’s efforts to strengthen local biopharmaceutical production
and health security.
The facility, operated by
Biovac Institute, was developed through a public-private partnership
established in 2003 aimed at building domestic vaccine manufacturing capability
in South Africa and the wider African continent.
The launch event included a
tour of the upgraded facility and demonstrations of its enhanced production
capabilities, with government and industry stakeholders in attendance.

Representing the department
at the event, Director-General Dr Mlungisi Cele noted that the expansion is a
key development for South Africa’s biopharmaceutical sector and aligns with
broader national industrial development objectives.
He emphasized that the
investment reflects the intersection of industrialisation and research and
development, areas considered central to the country’s long-term economic and
health strategies.
According to the Department
of Science, Technology and Innovation, the expanded facility strengthens South
Africa’s ability to produce and supply vaccines locally, thereby contributing
to improved health system resilience and reduced dependence on external supply
chains.

Officials added that the
development supports broader continental goals of enhancing Africa’s health
security through local manufacturing capacity and scientific advancement.
The expansion of Biovac is
expected to play a strategic role in advancing vaccine production capabilities,
supporting innovation in life sciences, and reinforcing South Africa’s position
within the global biopharmaceutical landscape.
