The Nigerian
Communications Commission (NCC) has launched a Zero-Rated Access to Educational
Platforms Initiative aimed at reducing data-cost barriers and expanding access
to approved digital learning platforms and educational resources across
Nigeria.
The initiative
is being implemented in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Education as
part of efforts to make digital education more inclusive and accessible to
students and other learners.
The launch
brought together stakeholders from government, academia, the communications and
education sectors, as well as student representatives, to discuss the
implementation and expected impact of the initiative.
The zero-rating
arrangement is intended to allow students and learners to access approved
educational platforms without incurring the usual data charges, potentially
improving access to digital learning resources for those constrained by
connectivity costs.
A panel session
held as part of the launch examined the vision behind the initiative, its
implementation and the potential benefits of zero-rated access to educational
platforms.
Participants
also discussed the importance of collaboration among government institutions,
education providers, telecommunications stakeholders and other partners in
ensuring that the programme delivers meaningful and sustainable results.
The NCC said
the initiative represents another step in Nigeria’s digital education journey
and reflects the role of technology and partnerships in expanding learning
opportunities.
The programme
is expected to support wider participation in digital learning by reducing one
of the barriers to accessing online educational content and platforms.
The initiative
underscores Nigeria’s efforts to use digital connectivity as a tool for
improving access to education and ensuring that more students and learners can
benefit from the country’s growing digital education ecosystem.
