EU
Space Days 2026 has officially opened in Nicosia, Cyprus, convening more than
450 stakeholders from across the European space ecosystem, including
policymakers, industry executives, investors, entrepreneurs and technology
innovators. The event is focused on shaping the trajectory of Europe’s space
policy, strengthening commercial opportunities and accelerating innovation
across the sector.
In
his opening address, European Commissioner Andrius Kubilius underscored the
need for Europe to accelerate its participation in the rapidly expanding global
space economy, which is projected to triple over the next decade. He emphasized
that European space enterprises must be positioned at the forefront of this
growth cycle, supported by coordinated policy frameworks and sustained backing
from the European Commission. He further highlighted that space capabilities
are increasingly central to Europe’s strategic resilience, particularly in
relation to defence applications, including secure satellite communications,
navigation systems and Earth observation infrastructure.
The
Commissioner’s remarks reflected a broader policy direction linking space
development with Europe’s defence and security priorities, as well as its
industrial competitiveness agenda. He stressed that space technologies are no
longer solely exploratory or scientific assets but are now integral to economic
development, public service delivery and geopolitical stability.
Hosting
this year’s edition carries particular significance for Cyprus as it aligns
with the country’s upcoming presidency of the Council of the European Union in
2026. Nicodemos Damianou noted that the event positions Cyprus as a strategic
regional gateway for digital infrastructure and emerging space technologies,
including satellite communications and Earth observation services. He added
that the gathering reinforces Cyprus’s ambition to play a greater role in
Europe’s innovation and digital transformation ecosystem.
EU
Space Days 2026 continues with high-level discussions and technical sessions
aimed at translating Europe’s space ambitions into commercial and public-sector
applications, while strengthening collaboration across member states and
industry actors.
