The United Nations
Development Programme (UNDP), with support from the Government of Switzerland,
has launched a technical mission in Ghana to strengthen the implementation and
scaling of its Climate-Smart Agriculture for Rice project.
The initiative promotes
Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD), a rice cultivation technique designed to
reduce methane emissions while improving the sustainability of rice production.
The technical mission brings
together UNDP’s Carbon Markets Technical Specialist, the Project Management
Unit and national partners to assess progress, strengthen project data systems
and identify opportunities to expand the intervention.
The team is also reviewing
lessons from the project’s first verification process and strengthening
preparations for the second monitoring period.
The work forms part of
efforts to improve the quality and reliability of data generated through the
project, which is critical for measuring emissions reductions and supporting
credible climate action.
The initiative also seeks to
contribute to the development of high-integrity carbon markets by ensuring that
emissions reductions from climate-smart agricultural practices can be properly
monitored, verified and reported.
UNDP said the mission will
help strengthen Ghana’s pathway towards scaling climate-smart rice production
while supporting national efforts to reduce agricultural emissions.
