Vodacom Mozambique has launched its commercial
5G services in the country's capital city Maputo. The company plans to extend
its 5G service to other parts of the country in the coming years, connecting up
to 75 percent of the population by 2025.
The event was attended by the Minister of
Transport and Communications, Mateus Magala; the Chairman of the Board of
Directors of the National Institute of Communications of Mozambique (INCM),
Tuaha Mote; as well as Vodacom partners, suppliers and customers, who were able
to witness the launch of 5G Technology in Mozambique.
Speaking at the colourful ceremony the Chairman
of the Board of Directors of Vodacom, Nuno Quelhas pointed out that the launch
of 5G in a historic milestone for Vodacom Mozambique and that in addition to
being the first operator on the country to introduce the latest technology, it
has the possibility of increasing the potential of the current 4G network,
taking mobile broadband to very high standards of connection speed and
simultaneous user.
“5G will increase the opportunities for value
creation because of its ability to provide wider network coverage, reliable
network connections and faster data transfer. And, in combination with other
technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), IoT and 3D printing, it will
drive innovation projects and deliver revolutionary business solutions,” he
stated.
“The increase in the number of connected phones
per area will enable the expansion of the global trend of the “Internet of
Things’, which Vodacom has already implemented, increasing the opportunities
for more and more smart and connected spaces, such as homes, streets,
hospitals, commerce and industries,” he added.
In his remarks the Minister of Transport and
Communications, Mateus Magala, also noted that the launch of Vodacom’s 5G
technology materializes the sector’s vision embodied in the Government’s
Five-Year Programme, which advocates the introduction of this technology in all
provincial capitals by 2024.”
In this first phase, Customers with Huawei,
Xiaomi and iPhone phones that support 5G will be able to access the benefits of
this technology. With a compatible device, the customer must have the latest
version of the operating system updated, with the 5G option active in their
network settings and be within a 5G coverage area. Currently, this technology
is being tested on more devices, such as Samsung, and is expected to be
available soon.
The 5G Network is actually part of Vodacom’s
strategy that is aimed, among others, continually expanding network coverage to
new rural areas, promoting better network and fibre availability, providing
state of the art technology, as well transforming the Vodacom network’s
architecture following the strategy adopted by Vodafone (Tech 2025).
