Eleven Ethiopian government
institutions, including the Ethiopian Artificial Intelligence Institute, have
signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at strengthening media regulation,
institutional coordination and technology-driven enforcement.
The agreement establishes a
framework for closer cooperation among institutions involved in media
regulation, capacity building and related areas, with the goal of creating a
more coordinated regulatory system.
The institutions will
collaborate on the development of artificial intelligence systems that can
support media regulation, while also promoting cybersecurity awareness,
information sharing and data exchange among relevant government bodies.
The agreement is also
expected to strengthen regulatory monitoring and capacity building, improve
coordination among institutions and support the enforcement of laws and
regulations governing the media sector.
Representatives of the
participating institutions, including Shimber Yilma, Head of the Director
General's Office and Technology Adviser to the Director General of the
Ethiopian Artificial Intelligence Institute, signed the agreement on behalf of
their respective organizations.
The initiative comes as
Ethiopian institutions seek to harness emerging technologies to improve
regulatory processes and strengthen institutional capacity. AI-enabled tools
are expected to support media oversight while improving the ability of
regulators to respond to emerging technological and cybersecurity challenges.
The signing ceremony also
provided an opportunity for participating institutions to discuss the
importance of the agreement and identify communication and coordination
channels that will facilitate collaboration among them.
