Rwanda and Google have begun
discussions on a strategic artificial intelligence partnership aimed at strengthening
the country’s AI ecosystem and advancing its broader digital transformation
agenda.
The Ministry of ICT and
Innovation hosted a two-day working session with Google that brought together
senior representatives from government, the private sector, academia and
research institutions to identify practical areas for collaboration.
The discussions focused on
key foundations required to support the adoption and scaling of AI in Rwanda,
including digital public infrastructure, data exchange, AI infrastructure and
cloud services, cybersecurity, government productivity, AI skills and research.
Participants also examined
opportunities to strengthen Rwanda’s innovation and startup ecosystem and
create an environment capable of supporting the development and deployment of
AI-driven solutions.
The Ministry said the
engagement is intended to move existing engagements with Google from individual
and siloed initiatives towards a more structured partnership with clear
priorities, responsibilities, investment opportunities and measurable outcomes.
The proposed collaboration
is expected to build on Rwanda’s ongoing work in digital transformation and
artificial intelligence while identifying areas where Google can contribute
technology, expertise and other resources.
The partnership could also
support the development of solutions with applications beyond Rwanda,
potentially positioning the country as a platform for AI innovation and
deployment across the region.
The two-day workshop marks
an important step towards defining the scope and priorities of the proposed
partnership as Rwanda seeks to strengthen its digital infrastructure, human
capital and innovation capacity to participate more effectively in the emerging
AI economy.
