The Responsible AI Lab
(RAIL) and the Quantum Computing and Assistive Technologies Lab (QCAT) have
welcomed a new cohort of National Service Personnel (NSP) with an orientation
programme designed to introduce them to the labs’ principles, values and research
environment.
The orientation was led by
Prof. Jerry John Kponyo, Principal Investigator and Scientific Director of both
RAIL and QCAT, who welcomed the new personnel and encouraged them to make the
most of the opportunities available during their one-year national service.
The new NSPs expressed
enthusiasm about joining the two research laboratories, citing the quality of
research in artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, machine learning
and cybersecurity as key motivations for their decision.
The orientation also
featured contributions from former NSPs Elliot Amponsah and Natalie Amorkor
Armarfio, who shared their experiences and highlighted the laboratories as
environments that prioritise professional growth and personal development.
They encouraged the incoming
personnel to embrace punctuality and teamwork, noting that continuous
presentations and hands-on projects would help them develop important soft
skills, including communication, presentation and collaboration.
Kwadwo Nyantakyi Marfo, PMP,
Abraham Yenu Lambon and Gifty Antoinette Hukpati also offered advice to the new
NSPs, urging them to approach their work with open minds and a willingness to
learn.
They stressed the importance
of discipline and excellence as the new personnel begin their assignments at
the laboratories.
In his closing remarks,
Prof. Kponyo said the labs offer exceptional opportunities for exposure and
growth and urged the new NSPs to make effective use of their one-year service
period by fully engaging in the learning and research opportunities available
to them.
