The African Group of
Negotiators Experts Support (AGNES) has joined civil society organisations,
Major Groups and other stakeholders from across Africa at a pre-regional
consultation meeting in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to strengthen African civil
society perspectives on global climate and environmental negotiations.
The meeting was organised by
WWF and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) in collaboration with the Catholic
Youth Network for Environmental Sustainability in Africa (CYNESA).
The consultation provided a
platform for African civil society to deliberate on key issues relating to the
three Rio Conventions, ongoing negotiations on the Global Plastics Treaty and
the role of civil society in advancing multilateral environmental agreements,
including the Minamata Convention.
AGNES was represented by
Leon Mulama, who participated in Panel 4, titled “Mobilizing Towards COP31 and
COP32: Partnering with African Civil Society to Deliver a COP for Africa and
the World.”
During the panel discussion,
AGNES highlighted the critical role of civil society organisations in bridging
the gap between science, policy and practice, while strengthening African
perspectives in global climate and environmental processes.
The organisation also
contributed to a team that drafted the final statement of African civil society
organisations, which was presented to and adopted by participating
organisations. The statement is expected to feed into the Regional Consultative
Meeting.
