Africa has concluded its
Fourth and Final African Preparatory Meeting for the International
Telecommunication Union (ITU) Plenipotentiary Conference 2026, with 46 African
Common Proposals ready for consideration at the global conference in Doha,
Qatar.
The preparatory meeting
ended on Thursday, 17 September 2026, in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, marking the
completion of the continent’s regional coordination process ahead of the ITU
Plenipotentiary Conference.
Roger Adom, Chairman of the
Regulatory Council of Côte d’Ivoire’s Telecommunications and ICT Regulatory
Authority (ARTCI), presided over the closing session alongside ATU Secretary
General-elect Eng. Kezias Kazuba Mwale, Chairperson of the African Preparatory
Meeting Mrs. Stella Erebor and ITU Regional Office for Africa Regional
Director, Dr Emmanuel Chifuel Manasseh.
The meeting brought together
African stakeholders to consolidate common positions on issues expected to
feature prominently in the global telecommunications and ICT discussions.
As the preparatory process
concluded, speakers stressed the importance of African unity as the continent
prepares to participate in the Doha conference. The 46 Common Proposals
represent positions developed through the African preparatory process for consideration
at the global level.
The discussions are expected
to strengthen Africa’s collective participation in global telecommunications
and digital policy deliberations, particularly as countries seek to advance a
connected, inclusive and sustainable digital future.
