Kenya and Canada are
exploring strategic partnerships in biomedical research, innovation and
technology transfer between Canadian and Kenyan institutions following a
meeting between Principal Secretary for the State Department for Science,
Research and Innovation, Prof. Shaukat Abdulrazak, and a delegation from
Western University, Canada.
The delegation was led by
Western University Deputy Provost and Vice-President, Research, Professor Jeff
Hutter. Discussions focused on developing locally relevant biomedical
solutions, strengthening research capacity and translating scientific discoveries
into practical benefits for Kenyan communities.
Drawing on Western
University’s experience in Uganda, the discussions explored opportunities to
establish impactful research collaborations in Kenya involving Mpala Research
Centre, Amref International University, the University of Nairobi and Pwani
University.
Prof. Abdulrazak underscored
the importance of value for money, accountability and measurable outcomes in
research investments. He also invited Western University to explore
participation in Kenya’s Grand Challenge Initiative, which seeks to mobilise
expertise and resources to address national development priorities through
research and innovation.
The Kenyan government will
facilitate a coordinated partnership framework, bringing together relevant
universities and research institutions to advance joint research, capacity
building and resource mobilisation.
The parties also agreed to
explore support for Kenya’s Grand Challenge Initiative, the Science, Research
and Innovation (SRI) Synergy Blueprint, the Bioeconomy Strategy, the creation
and support of clusters, artificial intelligence and the One Health initiative.
The partnership is intended
to strengthen Kenya–Canada cooperation in science, research and innovation,
ensuring that research delivers tangible solutions, improves lives and
accelerates Kenya’s transition to a knowledge- and innovation-driven economy.
