Alexandra, one of the
oldest townships in South Africa hosted staff of MTN South Africa as part of
activities marking this year’s Nelson Mandela International Day. The visit to the
township affords MTN South Africa to provide meals and food parcels to
community members.
As part of the day’s
activities, MTN organized a tour of the room where Nelson Mandela stayed when
he first arrived in Johannesburg in 1941, from his birthplace in the Eastern
Cape. This historical tour likely aimed to educate participants about Mandela’s
early life and his connection to the area.
Mandela Day is a day of commemoration and
celebration of the life and legacy of Nelson Mandela, the former President of
South Africa and anti-apartheid icon. It is observed annually on July 18th, Nelson Mandela's birthday. Mandela Day was officially declared by the
United Nations in November 2009, with the first celebration on
July 18th, 2010.
Mandela Day is not a public holiday in South
Africa but is recognized and celebrated nationwide. The day aims to inspire
individuals to take action and make a positive impact in their communities,
following the example set by Nelson Mandela's dedication to social justice,
reconciliation, and public service.
The
theme for this year is — “The Legacy Lives on Through You: Climate, Food,
and Solidarity.”
It
emphasizes the relevance of Mandela's legacy in addressing contemporary issues.
It highlights the urgent need to tackle climate change and food insecurity,
promoting sustainable practices, and ensuring access to nutritious food for
all.
Additionally,
the theme underscores the importance of solidarity and collaboration in
overcoming global challenges.
People
and organizations across South Africa participate in various activities such as
volunteering, community service projects, education initiatives, environmental
clean-ups, and supporting charitable causes. The goal is to promote
humanitarianism, unity, and the values of equality, peace, and freedom that
Nelson Mandela fought for throughout his life.
