The Director General of the Regional African Satellite Communications Organization (RASCOM), Timothy Ashong, has joined industry experts, senior government officials and stakeholders at the 6th Ordinary Session of the African Union Specialized Technical Committee on Communication and Information and Communications Technology (STC-CICT) in Libreville, Gabon, where the meeting is providing an opportunity for RASCOM to solicit the support of the African Union (AU) for investments to build the next generation of satellites to address the continent’s connectivity gap.

The session brings together government officials, experts and partners to advance Africa’s digital transformation agenda.

Mr. Ashong also met with the former Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), as part of engagements on the sidelines of the meeting.

The discussions provide an opportunity for RASCOM to seek AU support to mobilise the investments required to develop next-generation satellite infrastructure to serve Africa’s connectivity needs.

Mr. Ashong also met with the Ghanaian delegation to the meeting, led by the Deputy Director-General of the National Communications Authority (NCA), Mr. Suleiman Salifu, and the Acting Director of International Affairs at the Ministry of Communication, Dede Larboki Ofei.

Ghana is chairing the expert meeting of the STC-CICT, which brings together stakeholders to discuss communications and information and communications technology priorities across the continent.

RASCOM continues to engage with African institutions and stakeholders to strengthen cooperation and advance satellite communications as part of efforts to improve connectivity across Africa.
