Kenya has reaffirmed its
commitment to the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) partnership and outlined
plans to position the country as the institute’s hub for Africa, with a focus
on mobilising green investment, advancing emerging technologies and strengthening
regional cooperation.
The commitment was
reaffirmed by H.E. Ambassador Ali D. Mohamed, Kenya’s Special Envoy for Climate
Change in the Executive Office of the President, during the Joint Session of
the Global Green Growth Institute Assembly and Council in Seoul.
Addressing GGGI President
and Chair Ban Ki-moon, Director-General Sang-Hyup Kim and fellow member states,
Mohamed delivered Kenya’s statement, highlighting the country’s progress since
joining the institute in 2025 as its 50th Member State and the tenth from
Africa.
Kenya signed its Host
Country Agreement with the institute in August 2026. The government has also
provided office space at the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and
Forestry and the National Treasury, while the Kenya Country Office is
developing a portfolio aligned with national priorities, including carbon
markets, energy sector development and support for financial institutions.
Mohamed welcomed the Country
Office’s ambition to position Kenya as the institute’s African hub, mobilising
green investment, advancing AgriTech, FinTech and artificial intelligence, and
strengthening regional cooperation.
The institute is expected to
support investment in e-mobility, green fuels, green agriculture and green
buildings, while linking African initiatives with partners in Southeast Asia,
the Middle East and North Africa, and other regions.
Clean cooking also featured
prominently in Kenya’s priorities. Building on a high-level clean cooking event
co-convened with Norway, the United States and the International Energy Agency
at this year’s United Nations General Assembly, Kenya plans to host a Clean
Cooking Summit in Nairobi.
The country has welcomed the
institute’s support to develop investable programmes, mobilise affordable
finance and strengthen local manufacturing and distribution.
Kenya also signalled its
readiness to host a future Global Green Growth Week in Nairobi, which would
bring the institute’s global membership to Africa and deepen Korea-Africa
partnerships.
