Kenyan content creators on Facebook and Instagram will soon have the opportunity to monetize their content starting from June 2021. Industry observers believe this development is a significant move for Kenya, as it will become one of the few countries on the continent to enjoy this feature.

The announcement was made by Nick Clegg, the Facebook President of Global Affairs, during his meeting with President William Ruto at State House Nairobi.

This move follows a year-long push by the government to enable creators to earn from their online content. Nick Clegg stated that Kenyan content creators who meet the eligibility criteria will now be able to earn from their Facebook and Instagram spaces as the companies begin monetization by June this year.

President William Ruto commended the partnership between Kenya and the global digital platforms for enabling the monetization of content. He expressed satisfaction that content creators can now earn from their imagination and creativity, and he kept his promise to negotiate and secure fresh opportunities for them.

He further highlighted the significance of the digital space in creating employment for millions of jobless youths in the country. Additionally, he welcomed the plans to make monetization available on M-Pesa.
