The Togolese government
has welcome CSquare and Google’s Equiano subsea cable in Lome, marking the
cable’s first stop along Africa’s Atlantic coast.
Running from Portugal
through Togo, Nigeria and finally, to South Africa the subsea cable is expected
to have a direct impact on internet connectivity in Togo, resulting in high
speed improved and affordable internet access for millions of Togolese and its
West African neighbors.
In welcoming the new
subsea internet into the country, the Minister of Digital Economy and Digital
Transformation for Togo, Cina Lawson said “Broadening the access to high-speed
is a fundamental part in our national digital development process as we strive towards
achieving the objectives set out in our Digital 2025 Strategy. As Togo
continues to earn its place on the regional and international stage as a
digital hub and a favorable ecosystem for innovation and investment, our
collaboration with Google and CSquared in successfully landing Equiano further demonstrates
Togo’s commitments to enhancing public and social services for all citizens so
that they can benefit economically.”
Nitin Gajria who is the
Managing Director for Google sub–Sahara Africa noted in a post on Google Africa
Blog that, Equiano cable is part of Google’s ongoing commitment to Africa,
expanding opportunity and improving connectivity in order to help bring the
benefits of technology to more Africans.
He acknowledged that with
Togo’s strong commitment to boosting the digital economy, the arrival of Equiano
is a key step in the country’s continued digital development, adding that not
only will the cable improve the resilience of the Google network, but other
partners will be able to use and benefit from Equiano cable’s capacity.
“We are partnering with multiple
key telecom players, including Societe d’infrastructures numeriques (SIN) and
CSquared where Equiano lands to ensure that the cable can reach more businesses
and end-users Togo and the African continent more broadly,” he stated.
“With the arrival of the Equiano cable in Lomé,
we look forward to helping contribute to the achievement of Togo’s digital
goals and accelerating digital transformation not only in the country but
across the continent,” he assured.
