Kenya’s Data Protection Commissioner leads the charge in promoting innovation and data protection

The Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC)
has taken another step in fostering data protection and innovation in Kenya.
Led by Commissioner Immaculate Kassait, the ODPC has awarded certificates to
participants of a three-day data protection hackathon held alongside the 9th
Network of Data Protection Authorities (NADPA-RAPDP) Annual General Meeting and
Conference.
The initiative is part of the ODPC's efforts to
promote data protection by design and default, leveraging technology to
safeguard personal information. Congratulating the students from various
tertiary institutions for their outstanding contributions to innovation and
data protection, Commissioner Kassait encouraged them to continue pushing the
boundaries to inspire the next generation of data protection leaders and
innovators.
The ODPC has been actively working to regulate data
protection in Kenya, with a focus on sectors such as digital lending, health,
and education. The commission has also launched a nationwide public awareness
campaign to educate Kenyans on safeguarding their personal data.
