South Africa's Science Minister meets OECD Secretary-General to bolster STI collaboration

The Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation, Professor Blade Nzimande, has met with the Secretary-General of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Mr. Mathias Cormann, during an official visit to Paris aimed at strengthening South Africa’s global partnerships in science, technology, and innovation (STI). The meeting took place at the OECD headquarters, where the Minister expressed his gratitude for the OECD’s longstanding support for South Africa's development initiatives.

During their discussion, Minister Nzimande briefed Mr. Cormann on recent advancements in South Africa’s STI policy and shared updates on South Africa’s preparations to host the G20 meeting in 2025. This high-profile hosting will mark a pivotal opportunity for South Africa to underscore the importance of science, technology, and innovation in global economic policy. Minister Nzimande outlined the role of STI as a vital driver of economic growth and development in South Africa, pointing to how the country’s evolving STI policy framework aims to foster innovation, enhance competitiveness, and promote inclusive growth.

Through thier engagement with the OECD, South Africa aims to leverage international expertise and resources to strengthen its STI ecosystem, contributing to economic resilience and sustainability.
