WiSolar, a leading technology company in the renewable energy
space, has launched a hybrid prepaid solar electricity platform called "WiGo."
The platform designed for Nigerian and South African markets seeks to draw the attention of both Nigerian and South African governments to the need for them to consider using hybrid prepaid solar electricity to improve their
national energy security. The company plans to partner with local authorities
and power companies to provide financial incentives for customers who are
willing to shift from using fossil fuels to using renewable energy.
The company says it is the first of its kind in
sub-Saharan Africa, designed to help people save money on their
energy bills. The company's proprietary model allows customers to buy
electricity in advance and pay for it over time with a credit card or debit
card. It also allows them to purchase electricity at wholesale prices and sell
it back to the grid at retail rates.
The platform allows users to buy electricity from one of
three different providers: Solar City Nigeria Limited (SCNL), Solar Electric
Power Company (SEPCO), and PowerGen Energy Solutions Limited (PGESL). If you
buy your electricity through SCNL or SEPCO, you will receive a discount on
your bill; if it comes from PGESL, there will be no discount.
Tonye Irims Wisolar CEO said, “One of our commitments as a tech company and startup is the goal to
ensure that we contribute to the reduction of CO2 emissions and to contribute
in our own little way of empowering solar electricity users and bringing the
same closer to people across Africa,”
