The
United Nations Office for Digital and Emerging
Technologies has highlighted progress toward a global framework for
artificial intelligence governance, ahead of the inaugural Global Dialogue on
AI Governance scheduled to take place in Geneva.
The initiative, developed alongside the Independent
Scientific Panel on AI, is aimed at addressing disparities in the global
capacity to harness artificial intelligence and manage its risks in line with
the Sustainable Development Goals.
Briefing the press at the United Nations Office at Geneva, co-chairs of
the dialogue, Egriselda López and Rein Tammsaar, outlined the objectives of the
platform and the approach taken in designing its programme.
The dialogue will focus on four key
areas, including the opportunities and implications of artificial intelligence,
the global AI divide and equitable access, interoperability and the exchange of
best practices, as well as issues related to safety, human rights and
accountability.
Officials said the initiative is
intended to provide an inclusive platform for governments, international
organisations and other stakeholders to contribute to shaping global AI
governance frameworks.
The first session of the Global
Dialogue on AI Governance is scheduled for 6 to 7 July in Geneva, with a
follow-up meeting planned for New York in May 2027.
The United
Nations said the platform is designed to support coordinated global action on
artificial intelligence, ensuring that its benefits are widely shared while
addressing associated risks and governance challenges.
