Madagascar has officially
launched the UniPod Madagascar innovation hub, marking a new phase in efforts
to promote youth-led innovation, applied research, and entrepreneurship in the
country.
The initiative, developed
through a partnership between the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific
Research (MESUPRES), MIDSP MADA, and the United Nations Development Programme
(UNDP) under the timbuktoo initiative, is designed to provide a collaborative
environment where students, researchers, innovators, and entrepreneurs can
develop practical solutions to local development challenges.

The UniPod facility brings
together five specialised innovation laboratories focused on prototyping,
robotics and artificial intelligence, agrifood systems, green technology, and
technology transfer. These labs are intended to strengthen applied innovation
by linking academic research with industry needs and entrepreneurial
opportunities.
According to project
stakeholders, the innovation hub is more than a physical infrastructure,
serving instead as a broader ecosystem aimed at equipping young people with
access to tools, mentorship, collaborative spaces, and capacity-building
opportunities to support innovation and enterprise development.
The platform is expected to
play a key role in connecting research outputs to market applications while
fostering collaboration between academia, industry, and the startup ecosystem.

As the first UniPod
established in Madagascar, the launch represents an initial step in a wider
strategy to expand innovation infrastructure and opportunities for young people
across the country, with a focus on sustainable and inclusive development.
Officials noted that the
initiative aligns with broader continental efforts to strengthen innovation
ecosystems and empower youth to contribute to economic transformation through
technology-driven solutions.
