The
Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT has signed a Memorandum of
Understanding with the Kenya Meteorological Service Academy (KMSA) and the
Institute for Meteorological Training and Research (IMTR) to enhance the
delivery of climate information and strengthen climate resilience across Kenya.
The
partnership aims to translate climate science into practical solutions that
support policymakers, agricultural extension officers, farmers and local
communities, ensuring that climate information reaches those who need it most
for informed decision-making.
Speaking
during the signing ceremony, Wanjiru Kamau-Rutenberg, Managing Director for
Africa at the Alliance, said the collaboration is focused on turning scientific
research into tangible climate action by improving access to reliable climate
information at every level, including underserved communities.
The
Memorandum of Understanding builds on an existing collaboration between the
institutions that has already produced several initiatives designed to improve
climate adaptation. These include the development of professional training
curricula, gender-responsive climate service tools, participatory scenario
planning frameworks, artificial intelligence-powered climate advisory services
for farmers, and innovative approaches to climate communication.
The
partners said the expanded collaboration will further strengthen institutional
capacity and promote the use of science-based climate services to improve
agricultural productivity, support climate adaptation and enhance resilience in
the face of increasing climate variability.
