The
Ethiopian Communications Authority (Ethiopian Communications Authority) has
held high-level discussions with Apple Inc. to explore potential collaboration
aimed at accelerating Ethiopia’s digital transformation and expanding its
technology ecosystem.
The
meeting brought together the Director General of the Authority, Engineer Balcha
Reba, and representatives of Apple, including senior officials responsible for
government affairs and public policy across Africa and Eurasia.
Discussions
focused on strengthening Ethiopia’s application development ecosystem and
expanding opportunities for local developers through improved access to the
Apple App Store, with the aim of fostering innovation, entrepreneurship and
investment in the country’s growing digital economy.
Both
parties also examined potential areas of cooperation in digital policy and
regulatory frameworks, including consumer protection, data governance, child
online safety, device certification, carrier compatibility and broader measures
to enhance access to authentic digital services and devices.
The
Ethiopian Communications Authority emphasized the importance of building local
capacity through partnerships with global technology firms, particularly in
areas such as developer training, digital skills development, innovation
programmes and collaboration with universities and innovation hubs. The
Authority also invited Apple to consider establishing innovation and
development laboratories in Ethiopia to support long-term ecosystem growth.
Ethiopian
Communications Authority stated that it remains committed to working with
global technology leaders to strengthen Ethiopia’s digital infrastructure,
improve regulatory standards and build a secure, inclusive and competitive
digital economy.
