The Ethiopian Communications Authority (Ethiopian Communications Authority) has held high-level discussions with Apple Inc. to explore potential collaboration aimed at accelerating Ethiopia’s digital transformation and expanding its technology ecosystem.

The meeting brought together the Director General of the Authority, Engineer Balcha Reba, and representatives of Apple, including senior officials responsible for government affairs and public policy across Africa and Eurasia.

Discussions focused on strengthening Ethiopia’s application development ecosystem and expanding opportunities for local developers through improved access to the Apple App Store, with the aim of fostering innovation, entrepreneurship and investment in the country’s growing digital economy.

Both parties also examined potential areas of cooperation in digital policy and regulatory frameworks, including consumer protection, data governance, child online safety, device certification, carrier compatibility and broader measures to enhance access to authentic digital services and devices.

The Ethiopian Communications Authority emphasized the importance of building local capacity through partnerships with global technology firms, particularly in areas such as developer training, digital skills development, innovation programmes and collaboration with universities and innovation hubs. The Authority also invited Apple to consider establishing innovation and development laboratories in Ethiopia to support long-term ecosystem growth.

Ethiopian Communications Authority stated that it remains committed to working with global technology leaders to strengthen Ethiopia’s digital infrastructure, improve regulatory standards and build a secure, inclusive and competitive digital economy.
