Ecobank Transnational
Incorporated (Ecobank Group) has marked the successful listing of its US$450
million Sustainable Agriculture and Nature Capital Bond on the London Stock
Exchange, in a move aimed at mobilising capital for sustainable development across
Africa.
Ecobank Group Chief
Executive Officer Jeremy Awori, together with Group Chairman Papa Madiaw
Ndiaye, rang the opening bell at the London Stock Exchange to commemorate the
listing of the landmark bond issuance, which attracted strong investor interest
and was 3.9 times oversubscribed.
The bond represents the
world’s first International Capital Market Association (ICMA)-designated Nature
Bond issued by a commercial bank, highlighting growing investor interest in
financing projects that combine financial returns with measurable environmental
impact.
Awori said the issuance
demonstrates the potential of innovative financing structures to connect global
capital with Africa’s sustainable development priorities, particularly in
sectors such as agriculture, forestry and water that remain critical to the continent’s
economy.
He noted that while Africa
possesses significant natural assets, businesses operating in nature-dependent
sectors often face financing constraints. The bond, he said, provides a
mechanism to address this gap by directing capital towards sustainable economic
activities.
A net amount of the funds
raised will support sustainable primary production, agri-processing and
nature-related infrastructure, including water, sanitation and irrigation
projects.
Ecobank said the transaction
aligns with its broader objective of mobilising capital to support Africa’s
real economy by connecting investors, development finance institutions and
capital markets with businesses driving long-term economic growth.
Awori emphasized that
addressing Africa’s financing needs will require collaboration among financial
institutions, investors, governments and development partners, with commercial
banks playing a critical role in creating pathways for sustainable investment.
