The Deutsche Gesellschaft
für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is supporting Malawi’s Data
Protection Authority (DPA) with a three-day Data Protection Training of
Trainers Programme aimed at strengthening the country’s capacity to implement
its data protection framework.
The programme, held from
September 14 to 16, 2026, in Lilongwe through GIZ’s Data Governance in Africa
Initiative, brings together selected participants to deepen their understanding
of Malawi’s data protection requirements and develop their capacity to train
Data Protection Officers, Data Controllers and Data Processors across the
country.
The training goes beyond
legal requirements, with participants working through practical scenarios and
approaches for translating data protection obligations into everyday
organisational practice.
The programme covers areas
including understanding data protection responsibilities, managing risks,
responding to data breaches and strengthening organisational compliance.
Alongside the Training of
Trainers component, GIZ is supporting the Data Protection Authority to
strengthen its institutional capacity through dedicated work on data protection
audits and investigations.
The institutional support
comes as Malawi advances the practical implementation of its data protection
framework and seeks to strengthen the institutions and skills required to
enforce and operationalise data protection requirements.
The initiative is designed
to create a multiplier effect by strengthening the DPA’s internal capacity
while equipping trained participants to transfer their knowledge and experience
to organisations across Malawi.
