The Government of Gabon,
with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), is
initiating a process to develop a national artificial intelligence strategy
aimed at defining AI applications that respond to the country’s needs,
strengthening skills and establishing a framework for responsible development.
The strategy development
process will take place from September 28 to 30, 2026, at the Libreville
Convention Centre, bringing together relevant stakeholders to discuss the
opportunities, challenges and conditions necessary for the development of
artificial intelligence in Gabon.
The initiative comes as
artificial intelligence continues to transform economies, public
administrations and societies, prompting Gabon to consider how the technology
can be developed and applied in ways that reflect the country’s realities and
priorities.
According to the Ministry of
the Digital Economy, Digitalisation and Innovation, the challenge for Gabon is
to define uses of AI that meet national needs while developing the human
capacity required to support the technology.
The process will also focus
on creating a framework of trust for the responsible development of artificial
intelligence, with consultations expected to contribute to the formulation of a
strategy adapted to Gabon’s national context.
The government’s engagement
with stakeholders is intended to provide a platform for reflection and
consultation on the opportunities and challenges associated with AI, as well as
the conditions needed to support its development.
The ministry said developing
the national AI strategy is part of preparations for the technological
transformations expected to shape Gabon’s future.
“Building our AI strategy
today means preparing Gabon for tomorrow’s technological transformations,” the
ministry said.
