The African
Space Agency (AfSA) and European Space Agency (ESA) have opened applications
for an intensive Space Systems Engineering Training Workshop, marking a
significant step in the AU-EU Space Partnership Program. Scheduled for October
2025 at ESA's Education Training Centre in Belgium, the program aims to
strengthen Africa's technical capacity in critical space domains including
Earth observation, satellite communications, and space science.
This
capacity-building initiative targets engineering professionals and students
from AU member states, with two participants selected from each African region.
The curriculum covers essential space mission components - from initial design
through launch operations delivered through hands-on workshops, case studies,
and collaborative projects. Applicants must demonstrate technical proficiency
in systems engineering and mission design, with special consideration given to
gender balance in selections.
The training
forms part of broader efforts to develop Africa's space ecosystem, combining
upstream technology development with practical applications for climate
monitoring and disaster management.
As the June 10
application deadline approaches, the program represents a strategic investment
in homegrown space expertise that could accelerate Africa's participation in
the global space economy while addressing continental development priorities
through satellite-enabled solutions.
