United Nations
Under-Secretary-General, Amandeep Gill has concluded a high-level engagement in
China this week, advancing global dialogue on responsible digital
transformation during the World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) 2025.
The UN's top digital envoy stressed the urgent need for cohesive international
cooperation to ensure equitable AI development during multiple keynote
addresses.

At the
Ministerial Governance Dialogue and Concordia AI Forum, USG Gill warned against
fragmented approaches to AI regulation, stating that technological advancements
must serve humanity collectively rather than exacerbate existing inequalities.
His interventions highlighted the UN's commitment to bridging policy divides
between nations at different stages of digital development.
The visit
included the inauguration of the UN Industrial Development Organization's AI
for Industry and Manufacturing Centre of Excellence in Shanghai, a facility
expected to become a hub for sustainable industrial AI applications in emerging
economies. Mr. Gill later engaged with scholars at Fudan University, stressing
academia's critical role in developing human-centered AI frameworks that align
with Sustainable Development Goals.
"From
Shanghai's conference halls to university classrooms, we're building consensus
that AI governance requires inclusive, multistakeholder participation," Gill remarked. The discussions reinforced the UN's strategy to
position digital cooperation as a cornerstone of 21st century multilateralism,
particularly in addressing growing concerns about AI's socioeconomic impacts
and geopolitical implications.

This China
mission forms part of the UN Office for Digital and Emerging Technologies'
broader effort to harmonize global digital policies while respecting diverse
national contexts. The outcomes are expected to inform upcoming UN-led
initiatives on AI governance and digital inclusion ahead of the 2025 Summit of
the Future.
