The Director General of the
Regional African Satellite Communications Organization (RASCOM), Timothy Ashong has commended the candidates contesting for the position of Secretary-General
of the African Telecommunications Union (ATU), describing the election as an
important milestone for Africa's digital transformation agenda.
In a message issued ahead of
the ATU election, the RASCOM Director General acknowledged the professional
achievements and commitment of all the candidates, noting that each has
demonstrated a strong desire to advance Africa's digital future.
The statement said that
although the candidates may bring different priorities and perspectives to the
role, they share a common objective of strengthening the ATU and accelerating
universal connectivity, digital inclusion, innovation and sustainable development
across the continent.
The Director General
highlighted the ATU's longstanding contribution to Africa's ICT sector, noting
that the Union has played a central role in harmonising telecommunications and
ICT policies, promoting regional cooperation, strengthening spectrum management,
building technical capacity and ensuring Africa speaks with a unified voice in
international telecommunications and digital policy forums.
The statement further noted
that the ATU's work continues to support the implementation of the African
Union's Agenda 2063 and the vision of a digitally connected and inclusive
Africa.
Describing the election as
evidence of a strong and vibrant institution, the Director General said healthy
competition reflects the growing maturity of Africa's ICT community and its
collective commitment to the continent's digital progress.
The Director General wished
all the candidates success throughout the election process, expressing
confidence that the outcome would further strengthen the ATU, deepen
collaboration among Member States and usher in a new phase of innovation,
partnership and meaningful connectivity across Africa.
