The Kenya Space Agency (KSA)
has highlighted the potential of aerospace information technology to address
development challenges across Africa at the China-Africa International
Aerospace Information Technology Conference 2026.
KSA Director General Major
General Hillary B. Kipkosgey delivered opening remarks at the official opening
of the conference on August 11, alongside senior leaders from Kenya and China.
The conference, being held
at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) from August
10 to 16, is being convened under the theme, “Empowering China-Africa
Sustainable Development with Aerospace Information Technology.”
The event has brought
together academics, researchers and technology experts from China and Africa to
explore the application of aerospace technologies in addressing development
priorities and supporting the growth of the digital economy.
A key contribution from
Kenya was a presentation by KSA researcher John Ngugi on “Towards Automated
Field Boundary Mapping: A Deep Learning Framework for Smallholder Farm
Delineation.”
The research demonstrates
how satellite imagery and deep learning can be applied to automatically
identify and map agricultural field boundaries, with potential applications in
agricultural monitoring, precision farming and sustainable land management.
The presentation underscores
the growing use of Earth observation and artificial intelligence to develop
practical solutions for Africa’s agricultural and environmental challenges.
The conference also provides
a platform for strengthening China-Africa cooperation in aerospace research,
innovation and technology development, while promoting the transfer of
knowledge and development of solutions tailored to the continent’s needs.
