The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has hosted the 4th Technical Committee Training (TCT-04) meeting of the Banjul Accord Group Aviation Safety Oversight Organization (BAGASOO) in Lagos, with member states focusing on measures to strengthen regional aviation safety oversight.

The strategic meeting brought together representatives from Sierra Leone, The Gambia, Nigeria, Cabo Verde and Ghana, which participated virtually, to discuss the proposed work programme for 2027 and review key areas of aviation safety oversight.

The meeting covered legal safety management, training standards, aeromedical matters, navigational policy, aviation security, technical issues and on-the-job training, with participants also developing recommendations aimed at enhancing aviation safety oversight across the region.

Delivering his closing remarks, the Director General Civil Aviation (DGCA), Capt. Chris Najomo, represented by the Regional Manager of the NCAA Lagos Office, Barr Olubukola Teriba, commended the Technical Committee for its efforts during the five-day meeting.

Capt. Najomo said aviation safety is a shared responsibility and emphasised competence as one of its strongest foundations, stressing that effective people must be entrusted with the responsibility of operating and regulating the aviation sector.

He encouraged the leadership of the organisation to maintain its commitment to training, knowledge sharing and regional cooperation, noting that these efforts would help strengthen aviation safety oversight.

The DGCA expressed optimism that the decisions, recommendations and outcomes of the meeting would translate into stronger institutions and safer aviation systems across the member states.

Vice-Chairperson of the Technical Committee, Ms Elsa Fernandes of Cabo Verde, thanked all participating member states for their contributions and outlined the areas covered during the strategic meeting.

She noted that some remaining areas would be addressed when the committee reconvenes next year.

Fernandes also expressed appreciation to Capt. Najomo and Barr Teriba for the warm hospitality extended to the technical committee throughout the meeting.

The Technical Committee Training meeting is a specialised capacity-building programme conducted by BAGASOO to enhance regional aviation safety oversight through training, knowledge sharing and cooperation among member states.
