Kenya's State Department for
Science, Research and Innovation has engaged representatives of the Gates
Foundation and Science for Africa Foundation to advance the country's Grand
Challenge initiative and strengthen research and innovation partnerships in key
development priorities.
The engagement was led by
Principal Secretary for Science, Research and Innovation, Prof. Shaukat
Abdulrazak, who met with representatives including Tom Kariuki, Jordan Kyongo
and Kedest Tesfagiorgis.
Discussions focused on
advancing the Grand Challenge initiative in priority areas, including maternal
and child health, infectious diseases, and leveraging research and innovation
to unlock economic opportunities in line with the Government's Bottom-Up Economic
Transformation Agenda (BETA).
During the meeting,
Abdulrazak emphasised the need to bridge the gap between research and
innovation by breaking institutional silos and strengthening collaboration
among government, academia, foundations and industry.
He noted that stronger
research and innovation clusters would help translate scientific knowledge into
practical solutions, policies and economic opportunities.
The discussions also
highlighted the importance of leveraging emerging technologies, including
artificial intelligence (AI) and genomics, to support research and innovation
and address development challenges.
Abdulrazak reaffirmed the
State Department's commitment to strategic partnerships that advance Kenya's
research and innovation ecosystem.
He emphasised the importance
of collective efforts in turning research into impact, innovation into
opportunity and science into a catalyst for Kenya's transformation.
